#4 says John of Roxbury, a mercer from Co Essex, came in the "Lion" in 1632.Freeman 6 Nov 1633. Moved with wife Mary to Boston. Representative to 1st general court in 1634 and to several sessions later. In 1637, sympat hizing with Wheelwright, he was expelled from his seat, disarmed, and in 1638 banished to RI. He was chosen assistant 1641 and president of the colony 1647 , later
treasurer of the colony and one of the chief men of Newport. He was made by the Crown one of the council of Andros, and on his overthrow reassumed his place as deputy governer.

#15 1903 mentions him as one of the first settlers of the Island of
Aquidneck in 1638
#15 1982 John Coggeshall & family were part of a group, followers of Anne
(Marbury) Hutchinson, labeled "Antinomian", that held religious
beliefs that did not conform to Puritan doctrine. They believed that faith was sufficient for salvation, and good works were not necessary. They settled at the northern end of Aquidneck Island at a place the indians called Pocasset. This was in the spring of 1638 and was the 2nd settlement in Rhode Island , later renamed Portsmouth.
#15 1914 shows John Coggeshall as a witness to 3 wills in Hunden, Co . Suffolk,ENG (John Rowninge 1600, John Rowninge 1609, & Thomas Rowning 1609) and shows spelling of Cockesall or Coxall as well as Coggeshall (could be John's father, John the Younger)

#15 1919 John was of Castle Hedingham, Co. Essex, Eng., and of New
England, a mercer and merchant. He was taxed on lands at Castle Hedingham 17 De c 1628,
involved in a court case in 1620, and a land deal 1 Jun 1629. On 2 2 Jun 1632,
as John Coxsall, he appears on a list of 33 men transported to New En gland as
having taken the oath of allegience (Hotten "Orig. Lists"). Soon aft er,
probably accompanied by wife Mary and 1st 5 children, he sailed in th e "Lion"
and arrived at Boston 16 Sep 1632. He settled 1st at Roxbury. Admit ted
freeman 6 Nov 1632, then moved to Boston. He joined the First Churc h of Boston
20 Apr 1634, and was chosen deacon. He was a selectman 1634 and a de puty to
the General Court from Boston 1634, 35, 36, & 37. As a supporter of
Wheelwright and Mrs. Hutchinson, he was expelled from the court and
disenfranchised 2 Nov 1637. He was disarmed and went in 1638 to Rhod e Island,
where he helped found Portsmouth and Newport. He was an assistant i n 1640-41
and moderator of the first General Assembly in 1647. He was chosen P resident
of the colony and died holding this office. He was burried on his ow n land in
Newport, and there is a monument to his memory in the small burial gr ound at
the corner of Coggeshall and Victoria Avenues.

Slocum information is from two volumes of [UL:The Slocums of
America:UL], by Dr. Charles Elihu Slocum, Vol. II of [UL:English
Origins of New England Families:UL], from the New England Historical
and Genealogical Register, and Austin's [UL:Genealogical Dictionary of
Rhode Island:UL], and other brief mentions in other references. Just
to illustrate a family tendency to "do it my way", one of the Slocum
volumes was done throughout with phonetic spelling! The Slocum line
leads to Emily Swift Slocum, who was the wife of Rev. Frank Schell
Ballentine. Little is known of Philip beyond his marriage in 1621, and
the baptism of apparently his only child, Giles, in 1623, according to
the parish registers of Old Cleeve, Co. Somerset. He was deceased
already when his widow died in 1643.
