OCCU shoemaker

*First Dresser in America.

Records indicate he moved to Skewsby near Whenby around 1640. Rev Ezekiel Rogers was a minister in Rowley, Yorkshire, England. Rowley is located in the East Riding portion of Yorkshire. His congregation were devote Puritans. When the Church of
England began changing it's doctrine, such as allowing sports on Sunday, Rev Rogers and others refused to
comply. When he lost his position, he decided to move his congregation to the new world for religious freedom. Rev Ezekiel Rogers and about 20 families of his followers arrived at Salem, MA on 10 Oct 1638, wintered there and in April 1639 settled in
a nearby area which they named Rowley, MA. They sailed on the ship "John" of London from Hull on the Humber. At Rowley, MA they joined with about 20 other families that had come over on an earlier voyage of the ship "John" of London, which included
John Dresser and his wife Mary. Records indicate many of these families came from Rowley, Holme on Spaulding Moor and Bradford, Yorkshire, England John was assigned a lot on Bradford St in Rowley, MA. One source lists his birthdate as 1605 and born
in Skewsby, Yorkshire, England.
Today, the ancient chapel still stands at Rowley, England. It is described as a beautilful church in the middle of nowhere. Roses adorn the small church which stands by an ivied house, both sheltered by great trees. The walls of the church are
of brick and cement, but the tower is older. The nave arcades are 13th century and the bowl of the front is Norman. The chancel arch may be medieval. A bible dated 1717 still sits on the lecturn. The old vicarage is now the Rowley Manor Hotel.
From a booklet that describes Rowley and it's monuments is written; "The Domesday Book Survey of 1085, states there has been a church at Rowley for almost 100 years. There is a church and a priest here. Christianity reached this part of England in
627 when Edwin, King of Northumbria, was converted at Goodmanham, 9 miles away. The church was probably built at Rowley because it is midway between Little Weighton and Riplingham, which excavations have shown to have been a larger village before the
black death. There is no evidence of there ever having been a village at Rowley. Between 1630 and 1638, there were over 100 entries in the church records from Little Weighton and Riplingham, but none from Rowley. In 1638, the Rector, the Rev
Ezekiel Rogers, was suspended by Archbishop Laud because he was a Puritan and refused to read "that accursed book that allowed sports on God's Holy Sabbath". With 30 families from this and neighbouring parishes, he sailed from Hull and founded a
colony in Mass called Rowley."

Rowley in 1651 to Capt John Johnson and moved to Newbury with his wife.
He purchased a 400 acre farm in Newbury from Mathew Chaffey of Boston for L
L 155. (Essex Deed, 1 Ips:100). He had a grant of land by the colony in

The 1643 survey of Rowley states that he owned a 1 1/2 acre lot on Holmes St,
bounded on the south side by the town's common lot. Master Leaver is known
to historians by only one statement mase in Mourt's Relation (1622). "Since
no Leaver appears in Bradford's crew list, it can only be assumed he was a
member of the Mayflower's crew.

6282. Richard SWAN 1, 2, 3 was born before 23 Dec 1607 in Gilberdyke, Eastrington Parish, East Yorkshire, England. He died 4 before 14 May 1678 in Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts. Richard married 5 Anna SPOFFORD on 24 Feb 1621/1622 in South Cave Parish, Yorkshire, England. [Parents]

From Savage, 4:235: "RICHARD, Rowley 1639, came in the Truelove, 1635 aged 34, or rather more, emb. at London, 17 Sept. hav. in Apr. sent, perhaps his w. Eliz. in the Planter, s. William, and Francis, in the Rebecca; and d. Eliz. in the Susan and Ellen, under care of various friends, freem. 13 Mar. 1639, had liberty the yr. bef. to plant, with others, at Hampton, ..."

The source for birth dates and places of Richard Swan and his children are from Mrs. Mary Cole [cdgg47a@prodigy.com] of Kentfield, California, who examined the parish records of Eastrington.

Richard Swan was admitted to the first church of Boston in 1638, but only remained there a short time, being dismissed 24 Nov 1639 to "ye gathering of a Church at Rowley." He was made a freeman at Rowley 13 May 1640. He served on the trial jury 1651, 1659, 1664; and on the grand jury 1653, 1654, 1655 and 1662. Richard was presented in Court 18 Oct 1650 for breach of the peace in striking "Ezekiel Northen" in the face with a Staff or goad. He was fined 3 shillings. From the smallness of the fine, the court must have thought he had some provocation. On 16 Mar 1654/1655, Richard Swan was owed by the estate of Henry Sewall "for twelve weekes tendans and wood, washing and provision 16li, 14s; for writing, hellping make up accounts and prizing goods, 9s.6d." On 31 Mar 1657 he deposed that he bought a couple of oxen of Mr. Dummer about two years after Mr. Nelson went to England and they were Mr. Nelsons oxen. He made an error in some testimony before the court of Assistants, but he acknowledged the mistake, and the court restored him to jury duty. In 1668 Richard Swan sued John Morgan for taking away John Huttson, servant of said Swan. He won the case and the boy was to be returned to him. Goodwife Lambert of Rowley had sold her indentured servant, John Hudson, to Richard Swan of Rowley for L14 to be paid in wheat and barley. (She sold his time as a servant.) Charles Brown deposed he heard John Hudson say that Richard Swan was to buy him and he rejoiced much at it. The indenture was dated 1 Dec 1664, John Hudson, son of John Hudson of Bristol, England, aged about 12, withconsent of Mr. William Woodcocke of Salem, to whom he was committed in trust, bound himself to John Hutchinson of Salem fr 8-1/2 years. On 17 Dec John Hutchinson of Salem made over the boy to Richard Swan of Rowley with full consent of John Hudson of Rowley. John Morgan, commander of the Bristow (Bristol?) ship, lying in Marblehead harbor had taken Hudson, who was his cousin, and given him to Oliver Purchase. On 10 Mar 1669-1670 Richard Swan of Rowley, with the consent of his wife Ann, sold their portion in the Hogg Island mash to son John Hobkinson.

6283. Anna SPOFFORD 1 was born Sep 1598 in Kirk Ella, Yorkshire, England. She died 2 before 4 Apr 1658 in Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts. [Parents]

Whether or not John Spofford is the father of the Anna who married Richard Swan is not proven. An Anna Spofford was born September 1598 to John Spofford in Kirk Ella, England, this based on parish records provided by Alex Spofforth of the UK to Robert Spafford and is posted at . While, if true, this pieces a lot of information together, the one item that suggests caution is that Anna's last child was born in March 1644 which, if she had been born in 1598, would make her 45.5 years old at the child's birth. Provisionally, she is being listed as John's daughter because it is a plausible relationship.
